How to Write a Good Love Letter
Idea #1

Personal is the keyword here. Make sure it is personal and does not look like a scoop for a news article! It should be handwritten and not printed or typed.

The words should come from your heart. It not only sounds genuine and warm, but it is what you really feel.

Let your beloved why is he/she so special and what is it about them that you love so much. Tell them how they make your life merrier just by their presence.

Express your gratitude and thank them for being in your life.

Be tender and lavish love and affection.

Declare your love for them shall never die and you will always be there for them no matter what.

Do not exaggerate it unnecessarily as it may look fake and too gaudy. Keep it natural and original. And please be sincere and truthful about whatever you write.

Idea #2

Write a page of standard prose, as fast as you can, about how you felt the first time you saw your loved one, how you felt the first time you knew you were in love, and how you feel right now about being together. These three moments in time will create the structure of your poem.

Replace any weak verbs with stronger verbs and any pronouns with proper nouns. Words depicting the 5 senses work well for love poems.

Reread your passage and pick a metaphor to tie the three moments together. Choosing a metaphor is the most fun part so be wild with it. An opening flower is a tried and true metaphor for love, but a cloud that looks like a heart might work even better.

Rewrite your passage using the metaphor to describe the three moments.

Read your page aloud, change things that sounds "off" to you. Make notes where you feel there's a pause in the flow.

Write the poem, putting a line breaks where you made the notes.

Whether you type or write the poem consider framing your poem. Your loved one may want to keep the poem as a memento!

Read the poem aloud to the person you love, or present it as a gift to them.

Love Letter Ideas
Idea #1

Another idea is to write the story of a movie that is a favorite of both of you. Instead of the actors, write your and your beloved's name.

Idea #2

Write a love letter that looks like a things-to-do list. Begin with a sentence like "10 reasons why I love you" and write down your reasons in points. Don't forget to make small hearts in the corners just to make it look a bit different from a real things-to-do list! Stick it on the fridge or some place where your beloved is sure to find it.

Idea #3

Write a small but romantic love letter (about 5 lines in length or less). Then, get your local newspaper and circle all the words you need (in order) to include in your letter. Then leave the paper with a special note on top telling them to put together the words to form the letter.

Idea #4

At set periodic times of the day send one line of an e-mail letter to your love.

Love Poems Anyone Can Write
Idea #1

One of the easiest and quickest ways to write a poem is using a format called an acrostic. An acrostic poem is where every line starts with a letter of a word that is displayed vertically. For example:

In case you were in doubt that my

Love is not true, remember this
Only you can make me feel
Vulnerably, completely and
Entirely in love with

You
Only and always
Unconditionally you

Note that if you look at the first letter of each line, you will see "I love you" written vertically. This is an especially fun format when you use your names. For example, Jason Loves Julie, or My Love Teresa. You do not need to write sentences like in the example above. A simple word for each line is more than appropriate.

Idea #2

Another fun and easy poetry format is a cinquain poem. Cinquains have five lines. Each line must contain a certain element. Here is the standard format.

Line 1: Title (noun) - 1 word
Line 2: Description - 2 words
Line 3: Action - 3 words
Line 4: Feeling (phrase) - 4 words
Line 5: Title (synonym for the title) - 1 word

An example cinquain:

Lover
Exquisite, divine
Need to touch
Wishing you were here
You

Cinquains are great when sent as a quick loving note in an email, at the end of a letter or hidden in a special place for your partner to find.

Idea #3

Affection
Requires no customization except adding your name.

Ode to my Caramel Crumpet

by _____________[your name]

Dear Pumpkin Pancake,

When I think about you, my angelic love muffin,
My buttercream dumpling, my turkey with stuffin',
I think of the visions of you in my head,
Enjoying the pancakes I brought you in bed
With you dunking each bite in a syruppy puddle
And me begging you for an after-breakfast cuddle
For you are my swan and I am your duckling
You are the girl that keeps my world from sucking
If I had to be stuck to someone with superglue,
I would wish with all my heart that it would be YOU!

With fuzzy love and sloppy kisses and squishy hugs,
Your faithful slave, humble worshipper and devoted cupcake,
____________[insert your name]

Rebus Poems
Idea #1

This is a rebus poem because some of the words are left out and instead a picture or object is used in place of a word.

I ___(sent)____ this valentine to say, (Attach a penny)

I ____(pick)__ you for my own, (a toothpick)

And tell you what a ___(match)_____ we'll make (a wooden match)

If you'll _____(be)______ mine alone. ( a bee sticker)

I ___(stamp)____ your name upon my ____(heart)___, (a postage stamp, a heart sticker)

I'll ___(string)____ along with you, ( a piece of string all curled up)

No one will ever ___(foil)____ our love, (a piece of tin foil)

Because _____(I)____ love you true!!! (a magazine picture of an eye)

Idea #2

Estimated time to make this valentine:
10-15 minutes assembly (?)

Appropriate age group(s):
Preschool and Younger
Elementary School
Middle School
High School & Beyond
Materials:

For each card:

  • Construction paper (red or pink)
  • White doily and crayons (optional)
  • Stickers, to seal the card shut, or envelope to fit it when it's folded
  • White glue/glue stick
  • Pencil to write/draw with
  • Stickers or magazine cut-outs for various words, if you like
  • Penny, toothpick, 'spent' match, cancelled stamp, piece of string

Instructions:

  • I (pick) you for my own.
  • And tell (U) what a (match) we'll make,
  • if you'll (B) mine alone.
  • I (stamp) your name upon my (Heart),
  • I'll (string) along with U,

Idea #3

To many people writing a love poem can feel like a daunting task. With a few creative supplies, and a great idea, you will find that it's not quite as unbearable as you may have thought.

You've heard the saying "pictures say a thousand words." Use this to your benefit and create a rebus love poem for your sweetheart. Start collecting different pictures you can use. The following sources are excellent things to look for:

  • stickers
  • stamps & ink
  • magazine clippings
  • newspaper clippings

Once you've collected enough "pictures," you can start making your rebus poem. Remember, the entire poem doesn't need to be from pictures.

You can make your rebus love poem even more unique by the paper you choose. Newspaper, colored file folders, posters and card stock are just a few ideas. Think about what emotion you want your partner to feel when they read it and go from there!

Rhyming Poems
Item #1

You're perfect and so is this love that we share

All I ever wanted was to be in your heart,
And for us to be together, and never be apart.
When you are sad, I will dry your tears
When you are scared, I will comfort your fears
No one else in the world can ever compare,
You're perfect and so is this love that we share.
We have so much more than I ever thought we would,
I love you more than I ever thought I could.
I promise to give you all I can give,
I'll do anything for you as long as I live.
When you need love, I will share
When you are sick, I promise I will care
In your eyes I see our present, our future and past,
By the look in your eyes I know we will last.
I hope that one day you'll realize,
How perfect you are when seen in my eyes.
Now the time has gone by, in laughs and tears,
These days I will remember, for years and years.
Those memories we have, will never fade,
Because these are the steps, that we have made.
But that was the past, the future is near,
And I just can't wait, for what will appear.
I'll take care of you and treat you right
I'll lay by your side even when we fight
The dreams I have, that all involve you,
the chances I see and everything we can do.
I could go on for days, telling you what I feel,
but all you have to know is my love for you is real.

The one I love

The one I love with all my might.
The one I'm thinking of tonight.
The one that helps me make things right.
The one I long to kiss goodnight.
The one I dream of when i sleep at night.
The one I think of when I hug my pillow tight.
The one that makes me happy when she comes into my sight.
The one I'm not giving up without putting up a fight.

Item #5

Shall I compare thee to a summers day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate;
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date:
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade,
Nor lose possession of that fair thou owest;
Nor shall death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st:
So long as men can breathe, or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
- Sonnet XVIII William Shakespeare
